Biography
Compton’s practice is primarily focused on real estate and the representation of small businesses. Matters range from the purchase (or sale) of businesses, incorporation/organization, contract negotiation or review, to dispute resolution and collection. When he began practicing, he took on the areas of Immigration and Bankruptcy, both of which were fulfilling in ways not originally envisioned. Though he has not had an immigration practice for over 10 years, he maintains strong relationships with business clients initiated through his immigration practice. Until recently he had both an active Debtor and Creditor practice. The intersection of real estate and bankruptcy practice areas has enabled him to assist clients in workout situations. Currently only engaged in creditor representation, his bankruptcy background continues to offer value to his business and real estate clients.
Compton is a Roanoke native, having left twice, he moved back most recently in 2000, where he began his legal practice with one of the predecessor firms of OPN Law. Since returning to Roanoke, his civic activities have varied among the following:
- Ducks Unlimited, Star City Chapter, Treasurer (2004-2008)
- Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce (Board of Directors 2005-2012, President 2011)
- Salem/Roanoke County Bar Association (Officer 2006-2011, President 2011)
- Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia, Inc. (Mill Mountain Zoo Board 2012-2016)
- Boy Scouts of America, Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Great Valley District Chair (2019-2021); Board Member (2019-)
- LewisGale Medical Center (Board of Trustees 2019-2024, Chair 2023-2024)
- Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church – Member
Most of Compton’s time away from the office is spent with his wife and three children as “homebodies” or engaged in some outdoor adventure. An avid hunter and fisherman, his success is measured more in his time in the outdoors and the relationships supported thereby than by any trophies likely to impress. For a less active time of leisure, he enjoys reading history and watching college football.
